Design Love: Alcova Miami

Last week, Miami Art Week swept through the Magic City. One must visit on our fair-hopping was Alcova, a design fair featuring innovative and interesting design across multiple mediums. Set up like an aesthetic Easter egg hunt across several buildings that comprise the Miami River Inn, Alcova was a must-visit and quickly gained the attention of design media and fans all week long.

It was really interesting to speak to the curatorial lead for the Puglia Contemporary Land exhibition, which highlighted contemporary furniture companies such as Amura, Vero International, and Da a; ceramics by Fratelli Colì with Antonio Marras, and Enza Fasano with the Terraterra project (featuring Zoe Williams, Judith Hope, and Daniele Milvio). Also included were the social textile project by Le Costantine with a tapestry by Agostino Iacurci, frescoes by Fabio Novembre for Affreschi Affreschi, reinvented paper by Paper Factor, lamps by Nassi Lamps, and stone and olive wood transformed into design pieces by Pimar. The inaugural issue of Puglia Contemporary Land, published by Flash Studios, was also introduced on site.

Porcelain plates by Caleb Engstrom.

We were happy to run into two of our favorite alumni, Caleb Engstrom and Lily Mustelier, and meet a new face, Adam Kvaček. After purchasing a limited edition plate from Caleb, getting biophilic advice from Lily, and listening to an interesting POV on plant extinction and regeneration (you must check out the Paradox of Isoëtes), and checking out the mycelium collab between MycoWorks and Studio TOOJ.

MycoWorks and Studio Tooj presented a bespoke DUK Side Table Made with Reishi™ for their showcase, “Between Realms: The Known and The Untold” at Alcova Miami 2024.

As we were wrapping up due to scheduling constraints, we happened upon a room outfitted in monochromatic and minimalist designs that we wished we could have lingered longer in. The room was a collaborative exhibit called Something Last and was curated by Studio/ JIALUN XIONG.

Something Last featured works from artists and designers Cindy Hsu Zell, Devin Wilde, Jialun Xiong, Mary Ratcliffe Studio, Vy Voi Studio, and Xiaoyan Wei. With a focus on timeless visual expression, Something Last was a simple yet elevated vignette focused on the purest components of design: shape, dot, line, light, and shadow. The result was a gorgeously appointed yet completely livable space that emanated great taste in design.

Til next year, Alcova!
